Betaine, also known and sold under the trade name of Cystadane, is a product used in the treatment of high levels of a certain important body chemical, called homocysteine, due to an inherited disorder, called homocystinuria.

This product works by decreasing the blood levels of this enzyme, and that way helps to prevent serious blood clots, abnormal bone formation, osteoporosis, and eye problems. This product is available in the form of a tablet, for oral use or powder for solution.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before the decision to start this treatment is made, it is essential to get informed about the expected beneficial effects, as well as the possible side effects and potential risks.

This is a decision that you and your doctor, together will have to make. For the decision to be made, the beneficial effects must outweigh the potential risks. During the consultations with your doctor, remember to inform the doctor about:

3 Proper Usage

For proper use, get directions from your doctor. If you are using the powder form of this product, the powder should be mixed with water, juice or milk until it completely dissolved. After that, the solution has to be drank immediately.

The powder may also be mixed with food. If you are using the form of a tablet, do not chew, break or crush the tablets. Drink the tablet with water.

This product should be taken with food. The dose is individual for every patient. It is prescribed by the doctor, based on your weight, medical condition and the prognosis of the treatment.

The usual dose is one tablet, twice a day. Take this medicine regularly to get the most beneficial effects from it. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time for the next one is near, wait and take the next one.

5 Potential Side Effects

Along with its needed beneficial effects, there are possible side effects that could occur. These side effects do not occur within all patients, also they may be mild or more serious. However, it is important for you to get informed about the possible side effects, so that you would be able to notice their presence and inform the doctor as soon as possible.

Based on the side effects, the doctor may decide to discontinue the treatment or prescribe other medications that would help the side effects to improve.

  • Common side effects – nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhea. These are common and not serious side effects. If their presence worsens inform the doctor right away.
  • Serious side effects – persistent headache, or vision changes. Inform the doctor right away about the presence of these side effects.

A very serious allergic reaction is not common. But if you notice any of the following symptoms, inform the doctor right away – skin rash, itching/swelling of the hands, feet, face, tongue, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.
