1 What is Omeclamox-Pak?

Generic: Omeprazole, Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin

Omeclamox-Pak contains three drugs namely, omeprazole, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin. This drug is used for the treatment of H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria.

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Clarithromycin and amoxicillin are antibiotics that work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.

This drug will not work against viral infections. This drug requires a prescription.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before using Omeclamox-Pak, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it. Inform your healthcare provider for any allergic reactions to these drugs or any other drugs, foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals.

Carefully read the label of non-prescription drugs for any possible allergic reaction or contraindications. Studies in children regarding the correlation of age to the effects of Omeclamox-Pak have not been performed while safety and efficacy have not been established.

Studies in the elderly have not demonstrated any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the utility of Omeclamox-Pak in. Adjustments in the dose of the elderly may be required since they are more likely to have kidney problems.

Adverse effects have been reported in animal studies but studies in pregnant women or animals are still inadequate. Infant risk is still undetermined when using this drug during breastfeeding. Discuss with your healthcare professional about the potential risks and benefits of taking this drug while breastfeeding.

Drugs should not be taken together to prevent any interactions but in necessary cases inquire your healthcare provider regarding the adjustments in dosage or any other necessary precautions to prevent any unwanted side effects.

Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking any other drugs such as:

  • Drugs for which Gastric pH can affect bioavailability
  • Probenecid
  • Triazolobenziodidiazepines and related Benzodiazepines
  • HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
  • Sildenafil
  • Carbamazepine
  • Theophylline
  • Tacrolimus
  • Cilostazol
  • Antiretroviral Drugs
  • Anticoagulants
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Pimozide
  • Ergotamine/Dihydroergotamine
  • or Colchicine

Intake of specific food or using alcohol or tobacco with this drug is associated with an increased risk of certain side effects. Your healthcare professional can give you special instructions about the use of food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Inform your healthcare professional if you have any other medical problems such as diarrhea, kidney disease, liver disease, myasthenia gravis, heart rhythm problems, or mononucleosis.

3 Proper Usage

To use Omeclamox-Pak properly, you must follow all instructions given by your doctor. To prevent any side effects, take this drug exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

This drug comes with an individual daily administration card that contains 2 opaque, lavender and gray capsules of omeprazole, 4 opaque, peach and orange capsules of amoxicillin, and 2 white tablets of clarithromycin.

The capsules and tablets must be swallowed whole. Crushing, breaking, chewing, or opening any of them is not recommended. Each dose must be taken on an empty stomach, before the morning and evening meals.

Take this drug for the full treatment time to ensure complete drug therapy. The dose of this drug will be variable for different patients. The directions on the label or the prescription by your healthcare professional should be followed.

The dosage of this drug you take depends on the medical problem for which you are using this drug. Adults with duodenal ulcers and H. pylori infections are given 20 milligrams or 1 capsule of omeprazole, 1000 mg or 2 capsules of amoxicillin, and 500 mg or 1 tablet of clarithromycin taken as a single dose two times per day for 10 days.

Use and dose in children must be determined by your doctor. A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. However, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose.

Store the drug in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing. Keep out of the reach of children. Dispose any outdated or expired drugs and ask your healthcare professional for the proper disposal of the drugs.

4 Precautions to Take

Before using Omeclamox-Pak, there are some precautions you must take. Regular visits should be made to your healthcare provider to track your progress and to monitor the effectiveness of the drug.

Unwanted effects can be screened using blood, urine, and other laboratory tests. Check with your healthcare professional if your condition does not improve, or if it becomes worse.

It is not recommended to take Omeclamox-Pak with:

  • Certain ergot drugs (such as dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, D.H.E. 45В®, ErgomarВ®, ErgostatВ®, or MigranalВ®)
  • Or pimozide (OrapВ®) to reduce the risk of more serious side effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of anaphylaxis such as rash, itching, fever or chills, hoarseness, sores or ulcers on the skin, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, mouth, or throat while you are using this drug.

Inform your healthcare professional if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Tell your healthcare professional immediately if you become pregnant while using this drug. This drug may cause diarrhea that may occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this drug.

Check with your healthcare professional before you take any drug to treat diarrhea. Check with your healthcare professional if you have any questions or if mild diarrhea continues or gets worse.

Check with your healthcare professional immediately if you have symptoms of acute interstitial nephritis such as a fever, joint pain, skin rash, swelling of the body, feet, or ankles, or unusual weight gain after receiving this drug. 

Inform any health care professional or dentist who treats you that you are using this drug, as this drug may affect the results of certain medical tests.

Inform your healthcare professional if you have Asian relatives, such as Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese before using this drug.

Check with your healthcare professional before taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, and herbal or vitamin supplements.

5 Potential Side Effects

As with many medications, there are several potential side effects associated with Omeclamox-Pak. Side effects may vary for each individual and prompt medical attention should be given if they occur.

Seek advice from your healthcare professional immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal or stomach tenderness
  • Cramps, or pain
  • Blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty with swallowing
  • Dizziness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Fever or chills
  • Hives or welts
  • Itching, or skin rash
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  • Red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  • Redness of the skin, sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips
  • Swelling of the body, feet, and ankles
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Unusual weight gain
  • Or watery and severe diarrhea, which may also be bloody.

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine, the side effects will slowly disappear. Ask your healthcare professional about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.
