1 What is Stendra?

Stendra is a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor that is used to treat erectile dysfunction. This medicine inhibits the phosphodiesterase type 5 enzyme which is found primarily in the corpus cavernosum penis.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. This medicine helps to keep an erection after a sexual stimulation by increasing blood flow to the penis.

Stendra will not cause an erection if there is no physical action done to the penis during sexual intercourse.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before using Stendra, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Stendra or to any other medications.

This medication is not recommended for use in children. Pregnancy category C – No adequate studies has been conducted in pregnant women for the use of this medication.

There are no adequate studies whether Avanafil can pass through breast milk or if it could cause harmful effects to the infant. 

Taking this medication with any of the following medicines is not recommended and you may not be required to use this medication. Otherwise, alternative medicine may be prescribed for your other medications.

  • Amyl Nitrite
  • Erythrityl Tetranitrate
  • Isosorbide Dinitrate
  • Isosorbide Mononitrate
  • Nitroglycerin
  • Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate
  • Riociguat

Taking this medication with any of the following medications is usually not recommended, but with the exception in some cases. Dosage or frequency of one or both of your medicines may be changed if both medicines are prescribed together.

  • Conivaptan
  • Darunavir

Taking this medication with any of the following medications may cause an increased risk of certain side effects, but using both drugs may be the best treatment for you. Dosage or frequency of one or both of your medicines may be changed if both medicines are prescribed together.

  • Doxazosin
  • Erythromycin
  • Tamsulosin

3 Proper Usage

Proper usage of Stendra requires strict adherence to your doctor’s orders. Excessive use of this medication will increase the chance for side effects. This medication can be taken with or without food.

Avoid eating or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medicine. The initial dose for adults is 100 mg/day to be taken 15 minutes before sexual intercourse. Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor if needed.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is near for your next dose, skip the missed dose and start again to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Store the medication in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not keep expired medications.

4 Precautions to Take

In using Stendra, you must be careful and take some precautions as advised by your doctor.

Check with your doctor right away if:

  • If you experience a prolonged or painful erection for 4 hours or more.
  • If you experience a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • If you have a sudden decrease in hearing or loss of hearing, which may be accompanied by dizziness and ringing in the ears.
  • If you have more than one of these symptoms: blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position suddenly, sweating, or unusual tiredness or weakness. This medication can cause low blood pressure.

Tell to all of your doctors that you are taking Avanafil. You should also tell your doctor if you have any history of heart problems since this medication can cause serious side effects in patients with heart problems.

Avoid using this medicine with Riociguat, nitrate medicine, or other PDE5 inhibitors. Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages while you are using this medicine. Doing so can cause a headache, dizziness, fast heart rate, or low blood pressure.

This medicine will not keep you from transmitting HIV to other people during sexual intercourse. It is recommended to understand and practice safe sex. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any other medication.

5 Potential Side Effects

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while using Stendra:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Pounding in the ears
  • Slow or fast heartbeat
  • Arm, back, or jaw pain
  • Bladder pain
  • Bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
  • Bloody or cloudy urine
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Chest tightness or heaviness
  • Difficult or labored breathing
  • Difficult, burning, or painful urination
  • Fast, irregular, pounding or racing heartbeat or pulse
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Increased erection
  • Lower back or side pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain in the groin or genitals
  • Pain, redness, or swelling in the arm or leg
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Sharp back pain just below the ribs
  • Sweating
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Tingling of the hands or feet
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Unusual weight gains or loss

Less serious side effects:

  • Feeling of warmth
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
  • Sore throat
  • Stuffy or a runny nose
  • Acid or sour stomach
  • Belching
  • Body aches or pain
  • Change in color vision
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • A cough producing mucus
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
  • Difficulty with moving
  • Ear congestion
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of voice
  • Muscle pain or stiffness
  • Pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
  • Rash
  • Shivering
  • Sneezing
  • Sweating
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Anxiety
  • Bloody nose
  • Bone pain
  • Burning feeling in the chest or stomach
  • Confusion
  • Cool, pale skin
  • Depression
  • Feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
  • Increased hunger
  • Itching skin
  • Muscle aching or cramping
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nightmares
  • Seizures
  • Sensation of spinning
  • Shakiness
  • Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • Slurred speech
  • Swollen joints
  • Tenderness in the stomach area
