These 20 Psychologists Weigh In on Gender Identity

"When I hear young adults say they are questioning their gender expression or gender identity, I support them finding their authentic selves."

A psychiatrist for over 20 years at the University of Florida, Dr. Marcia Morris has seen her fair share of transgender students and heard their problems. She is a vocal advocate for greater acceptance of gender fluidity on college campuses. Over the years, she has observed the breakdown in communication between gender-nonconforming students and their parents, professors, and other important figures in their lives when discussing gender neutrality. However, Dr. Morris has recently begun to see a shift towards more tolerance of transgender students. Greater numbers of students are questioning their gender, and at the same time, their fellow classmates are starting to view gender as a spectrum instead of a solid construct. "When I hear young adults say they are questioning their gender expression or gender identity, I support them finding their authentic selves.” The psychiatrist said. “With celebrities like Caitlin Jenner coming out as transgender, and Miley Cyrus describing herself as gender neutral, the world is becoming a more accepting place for people on the gender spectrum."
