These 20 Psychologists Weigh In on Gender Identity

"I am concerned that too many impressionable young people are being seduced into the medical option as a quick fix to gender dysphoria."

Dr. David Ludden is a professor of psychology at Georgia Gwinnett College a specialization in cognitive psychology. His research focuses on the role of language in human psychology and how our social norms and beliefs both shape and are shaped by it. Dr. Ludden is a proponent of open discussion of gender identity to normalize it in our society, especially for adolescents, who often begin to question their own along with their sexual orientation during puberty. The distress that arises when one’s physical sex does not match their perceived gender is known as gender dysphoria, and Dr. Ludden takes issue with how this issue is approached. In his readings, hormone therapy is the common treatment method, often followed by sex reassignment surgery. "I am concerned that too many impressionable young people are being seduced into the medical option as a quick fix to gender dysphoria before they’ve had the opportunity to fully explore their sexuality and gender identity." This solution, however, fails to address the narrow perceptions established by our society, which Dr. Ludden believes is the real issue that needs to be corrected.
