18-year-old Brandy Vela committed suicide in front of her family after being relentlessly bullied about her weight.
When Brandy ignored Facebook messages from her bullies, the bullies would create additional accounts to send her harassing messages. Bullies sent Brandy cruel online messages calling her fat and ugly and making hateful statements like, “Why are you still here?”
Brandy tried to put a stop to the harassment by changing her phone number and reporting the issue to the police. However, law enforcement officers told Brandy they couldn’t help her, because the suspected bullies were supposedly using an untraceable online app. They could only intervene, they said, if something happened like a fight breaking out.
Brandy’s sister, Jackie, became seriously concerned when Brandy sent her a text message stating, “I love you so much, please remember that, and I’m sorry for everything.” Jackie called her parents and grandparents, who rushed home and found Brandy in her room holding a gun to her chest. They begged Brandy to put the gun down, but sadly, the teen had already made up her mind.
