The Real Origins of These 20 Strange Phobias

Phobiaphobia: Fear of having a phobia

Alright, we admit, this one sounds pretty ridiculous; however, there is a fear of having fears.

This phobia is actually more associated with the way that fear and anxiety makes you feel, and wanting to avoid it. You know the symptoms - butterflies in your stomach, a sick feeling, not being able to relax, etc. Some people simply cannot handle these and, ironically, develop a phobia of phobias.

Unfortunately, the presence of this fear actually tends to amplify the sensations associated with any other fear. For example, if you are afraid of spiders, you will experience a level of fear when you encounter one. However, if you have this phobia as well, you will become even more scared when you encounter one, because you are afraid of the inevitable fear that will ensue. It is not uncommon for those with phobophobia to have another phobia that they have experienced fear from that they would like to avoid.
