10. "Why do you look so sad?"
Often, those with depression will become masters of hiding it, as they do not want anyone to have to hear about their troubles. However, some days it just becomes too much to bear, and people will look down.
If someone looks sad, they probably are. So, do not waste time in asking them why they look sad, as they are probably worried about something much more serious than how their emotions look to other people.
Alternative: Instead of asking why someone looks sad, let them know that you have been worried about them lately because you can sense something is wrong. Let them set the pace - tell them that you totally understand if they do not want to talk about it, but that if they do, you are ready and willing to listen. However, if you make this commitment, be sure that you mean it and will be able to follow through.
