9. Certified Nurse Midwife
A certified nurse midwife may have fewer years of preparation than an OB/GYN physician; midwives often have the experience necessary as well as the time to be more involved in the care and delivery of a baby. The role does not stop with the delivery since many nurse midwives are involved in the follow-up care of the mother and the baby. Midwives also have a working relationship with an OB physician, and have the knowledge and practical skills necessary to know which pregnancies are beyond their practice. However, there will always be surprises. Most endings are happy, but you do need to be aware that the unexpected can happen. The median salary is $94,000.
