Common CBT techniques

Common techniques used in CBT therapy include journaling, talking through beliefs, practicing mindfulness, and thought exercises. Often there is homework assigned to continue the new thinking patterns outside of the therapist-led sessions. Sub-specialties include rational emotive behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy.

CBT is a common therapy technique used for depression, post-traumatic stress, obsessions, phobias, eating disorders, and anger management. It’s recently been introduced for substance abuse and persistent pain thought to be neurological.

CBT is becoming more wide-spread as a treatment for children on the autism spectrum because of its ability to quell anxieties, common in children with ASD. Anxieties are often caused by the type of “irrational thinking” CBT seeks to change.
