Helping Children to Understand Grandpa's Alzheimer's

Explaining the sudden mood swings

It’s difficult to elaborate on the factors that contribute towards the patient’s mood swings to children when they aren’t even old enough to understand what the disease involves. For this reason, a good analogy to explain the patient’s sudden relapses and mood swings could be by explaining how a radio works. Most children might understand it a little better, like when a radio can’t clearly pick up a signal, what comes through might be a little muddled. In the same way, sometimes the patient can’t clearly perceive their thoughts, which results in confusion, memory loss, or irritability.
