It's not always easy to find joy, especially with the challenges the Vertins have to face on a daily basis. One of her sons not only has DMD, but also lives with autism. Though her son is high functioning and extremely smart, he prefers to stay at home and be on a steady routine.

As a parent, Betty’s first priority is to treat her son’s DMD, but she has learned to go with the flow of her son's autism and keep his schedule at a steady pace.
