Signs of a Child Struggling with Mental Illness

For children, there are many treatment options beyond medication

A scary thought for many parents is that their child with a mental illness will have to take medication as treatment at such a young age. Sometimes this fear even prevents them from seeking out the treatment their child requires; however, it is important to note that children have many treatment options. Medication is certainly included, but it is not the only course of action.

Counseling is a very powerful tool when it comes to treating mental illness. There is talk therapy, cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, periodic assessments, case management services, crisis residential services, dialect behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, and so much more. These approaches can be equally effective as medication, depending on the situation, and should be utilized if your child is struggling.

In the United States, 75 to 80 percent of children who require mental health services do not receive them. It's imperative that this number decreases.
