The Role of Extracurriculars for Children With Autism

Social skills groups

One of the most notable effects of autism is its effect on an individual’s ability to operate in a typical social environment. On the more mild side of the autism spectrum, individuals will likely experience difficulty noticing and reading social cues that come more naturally to other children. This can become incredibly frustrating for children as they try to engage with their peers. On the more severe side of the spectrum, children may also have difficulty communicating themselves which can similarly be frustrating in a world that often assumes a certain kind of response. One intervention method that is being developed to help children learn some of the social cues and skills they’re expected to know but may have difficulty picking up are social skills groups.
