Sleep medications should be a last resort
Jeste explains that after she has gathered more information on the family’s lifestyle, she is able to work with them to make modifications. Sometimes this looks like creating a more consistent sleep routine, while other times it means modifying medications. Additionally, she says that even though children may beg for it, parents sleeping with their children can negatively impact everyone’s sleep. Only after lifestyle modifications have been attempted will she consider incorporating medications. Melatonin is what Jeste starts with, and then if necessary will trial a class of medications called alpha agonists that are commonly used to treat high blood pressure.
