Shannon recalled the first time she noticed her daughter’s symptoms. “I noticed she was not learning any words so I took her to the doctors” she said. Initially, the doctors told her that Joy did not have autism. However, after a couple of years, she decided to consult with a neurologist. “They diagnosed her with severe autism and it was just a fight from there to get services” said Shannon. From then onward, finding services for her daughter proved to be both difficult and expensive. “I know what it is like for families to struggle” she said.
