Michael Chu, a lead writer for the creators of Overwatch, said that the goal of Symmetra’s character was to be known as a heroine and not “the autistic” character. They didn’t want her disorder to define her identity. Chu says he had noticed many instances on the Internet where there were a lot of cyber-bullying and negative comments related to the subject of autism. The ultimate goal was to change how the public feels about people on the spectrum.
