Telling a Child He or She Has Autism

Avoid interruptions, and prepare yourself for any questions from your child

  • Make sure that your child cannot be easily distracted by their surroundings by steering clear of televisions, handheld game consoles, and any other possible interruptions
  • Be positive and straightforward when talking to your child about their diagnosis
  • Take your time in discussing your child’s diagnosis with them and keep in mind that you do not have to cover everything in one sitting
  • Be prepared for any questions that your child might have about their diagnosis and be able to explain it to them in a way that is easy for them to understand. Give your child some time to process the information about their diagnosis
