Physiatrist (Physical Medicine) Questions Falls

After a fall I have not been able to walk comfortably. Why?

I fell last month when I slipped in the bathroom. Since then I have been unable to walk comfortably. What is the cause for this?

You must see your doctor and be examined to answer that.
You may have injured something without realizing it. You should be evaluated by your primary care provider and they can order any testing that might be needed.
I am sorry you have had a fall do be careful and take care. It’s quite possible you have bruised yourself badly or you could have stretched muscles tendons, which are all quite painful. It can take six weeks plus to heal depending on many factors. How you fell, if you are on any medications, etc. Increase your protein in your diet. That helps healing and if you are still not better, please get an appt with your doctor or a physical therapist to check out your mobility. The body does not like to be jarred. Please go and get checked out. In the meantime, no more falls.

Many times after a fall, a muscle may be torn or ligament injured or tendon inflamed. That can lead to pain or uncomfortable walking pattern. Also, one’s gait can become uncomfortable because your alignment or kinetics are incorrect or altered. Finally, a fracture, arthritis, and stenosis should be evaluated for. Thus a thorough work-up, evaluation, and imaging are recommended. Then, you may be a candidate for therapy, core strengthening, or other intervention depending on the imaging outcome.
