Pediatrician Questions Protein shakes

Are protein drinks bad for kids?

I recently read an article that said protein drinks may be bad for kids because they contain a lot of unnecessary proteins inside of it. I am a mom to a 5 year old and I usually give him milk with protein powder because I thought they would help him. Am I wrong to do this?

Kids need 1-2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight. However, extra proteins may constitute extra loads for the kidneys to deal with. I do not recommend giving those if your kid is eating a balanced diet and getting enough proteins through his meals.
Yes
Excessive amounts of protein drinks can be bad on the kidneys. At 5 years old he needs at least 16 ounces of dairy a day and whole milk is sufficient. In the heat he needs to be drinking water instead of protein drinks.
