Prosthodontist Questions TMJ

Are these crackling sounds in my ear from TMJ?

I had TMJ issues a few years ago and am wondering if the effects are still lingering. When I open my mouth wide or yawn, there is a pop in my jaw and I hear crackling in my ear on the affected side. Is this normal to experience this so long after TMJ issues? Is there anything I can do to fix it or will I have this forever?

It may be. TMJ issues may reoccur. You may need to see a TMJ specialist to help get things stabile again.
Cracking noises in the TMJ are common. Even if there is no symptoms, your dentist should follow this closely, as pain could develop later. However, if there is pain already, I usually recommend a specific night-time and sometimes even day-time splint to stabilize the TMJ joints. This is to prevent further damage to articular disc and to allow joints to heal.
I suggest you see a specialist in TMJ or a prosthodontist who can diagnose and treat the issue.
See your dentist. Frequently you can treat that thru a use of either some adjusting of your teeth or by possibly wearing an appliance. Try to limit gum chewing or heavier things to chew such as baggies.
Yes, these are still TMJ dysfunction symptoms, noises are common in TMJ. You need to see a specialist to determine the gravity of your condition and find out what to do next.
If you have TMJ issues or TMD, your best bet is to see an expert dentist to find the root cause of it, and then get options of treatment before it gets worse!
Generally noises in your jaw joint especially crackling is a sign of a disharmony in the joint space. These noises are almost impossible to eliminate but they can be controlled and managed. There are several mouth guards that can help you with this condition. You need to see a dentist that focuses there practice on TMJ problems. The rule of thumb is once you have noise in your joint you have it for the rest of your life, my hope is that you can prevent it from getting worst. I'm sorry.
If you had TMJ problems before, the sequels of that will remain with you for the rest of your life. A clicking is normal as longest there is no pain and is not getting worse. That popping is the displacement of the disc in the condyle. An advice to you, do not open too wide your mouth because your jaw might locked or the muscles will be in spasms and that is very painful. My recommendation is to see your TMJ specialist to have an occlusal appliance fabricated to protect your teeth and your TMJ. Also to have your TMJ evaluated to make sure the disc is not worn down or you have some kind of arthritis or bone erosion.
Usually the clicking and popping sounds of the TMJ are normal. It is usually caused from the fluid that is in the TM Joint. It is very similar to the cracking of ones knuckles.
Crackling and noise when you open and close are not a normal event. It is caused by movement of the head of the mandible into the glenoid fossa. There is a meniscus in between the bony surfaces and most times when the occlusion is not right, the meniscus is affected.
The mandible is the only bilateral bone, it moves by the group of muscles that allow you to chew.
Most times this is not an easy issue to resolve,it can be helped by designing a proper orthotic occlusal guard. The occlusion must be examined and a accurate diagnosis will determine the treatment to solve the problem.
