OncologistThank you for your question. I think it is right for your GP to recommend getting it double checked at a breast clinic. I would recommend getting it biopsied and getting a mammogram to determine what the pigment actually is.
The biopsy and mammagram should give you confirmatory results. However, please check with your doctor on this.
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any further question.
Best wishes,

You are a 47 year old woman with a three month history of a skin lesion on your breast. It hasn’t responded to local therapy. A physician thinks it is a local irritation, but has referred you to a breast clinic for further evaluation.
A photo reveals a small lump inferior to your nipple.
I agree with your MD. The differential diagnosis (identity of the lesion) has a large number of possible causes. The most likely based on your doctors observation is that this is a benign lesion. However, a skin cancer or a breast cancer are on the list of possibilities. The only way to get a definite answer is to perform a biopsy which is a simple procedure. It can be an excision of the lesion under a local injection of pain medicine. Generally the soreness subsides within a couple of days given good care of the lesion including cleanliness.
The pathology report should be available within a couple of days.
Good luck.
