Your idea of badly damaged and my idea of badly damaged may not be the same. Most but not all teeth can be salvaged. Teeth that should not have a crown are those with periodontal disease, broken off below the gum line, split or fractured in half, or need a root canal and the patient is unwilling to have that done. If the damaged tooth has enough remaining structure left to support a crown, you can get a crown successfully.
