A dental implant is a titanium screw that is screwed into your jawbone…..yes, it will hurt for a few days. Just the act of the dentist holding your jaw tightly while they screw it into your bone can cause jaw soreness. Some people have discomfort for 3 days and for some it lasts up to two weeks. If you can take it, most of the time Tylenol is well tolerated, but ask your dentist what they recommend. Also, a heating pad on your jaw may reduce some of the muscle pain but again ask your dentist. The dentist that placed your implant should have given you postop instructions on what to take for the discomfort. FYI – when I got my implant my jaw muscles were sore for 3 days and the implant site was sore for 5 days until my mouth got used to having the implant there….then it all calmed down as my body adjusted…..heat and Tylenol is all I needed.
The implant could cause jaw pain if there's an infection around it. Your
dentist can take x-rays, check in your mouth and see what's going on.
