Yes and No :) Psych can be a major contributing factor to pain but is not usually the root cause. You are encouraged to see an Interventional Pain Management Physician who specializes in pain management to diagnose the root cause of your pain. At that time, your physician can recommend whether or not psychiatry would be an effective treatment option for your individual pain.
A trained psychiatrist should be able to provide, distraction techniques, behavior modification, hypnosis, and coping stratagies, all which can help manage painful issues.
Yes the emotional components as well as teaching you methods to mentally escape and deal with the pain
There is a subspecialty in psychiatry named pain management. This is a fellowship training for the psychiatrist to understand both psychological and organic pain and to help in their management.
Chronic pain management is a multidisciplinary approach, which means a team approach including interventional pain specialist, family physician, physiotherapist, and sometimes psychiatrist. Depending on the pathology of pain, in some cases, pain psychiatrist help can be invaluable.
A psychiatrist's specialty does not cover pain management.
Hi!

A psychiatrist is a great addition to the treatment of chronic pain. I do also recommend a physical therapist and a pain specialist. Sometimes patients also need other specialties as well. We call this a multidisciplinary approach so all providers can work together to make you feel the best that you can!
Yes, they can if they are fellowship trained to do so.
