“Can acupuncture cure hypertension?”
I have a high blood pressure problem. Can acupuncture help treat this?

Unfortunately, acupuncture alone cannot manage hypertension. It is a great adjuvant therapy along lifestyles and dietary modifications as well as western medication.

Absolutely. I have worked with several patients who were able to decrease their hypertension medication doses and even some who were able to stop taking them entirely. As always, that is a decision to be made by your doctor.
Acupuncture can absolutely manage high blood pressure. It is important that you first receive a consult and treatment option from your primary care provider. Also, make sure your doctor gives you the "ok" to receive acupuncture with the high blood pressure that you have.
If you have not seen your doctor, the acupuncturist may refuse to treat until the high blood pressure has been addressed by a medical doctor.
Once you have seen your medical doctor. Acupuncture has been prescribed by plenty of medical doctors to help manage high blood pressure (hypertension)!

Acupuncture can treat hypertension and ease the symptoms related to high blood pressure. There is no such thing as "cure" in this medicine. Chinese medicine is unique because treatments are individualized.
You can research about it. Acupuncture is not to cure anything but to balance the best way so you can have better life experience
There are several causes (essential and secondary) for high blood pressure. The best way is to consult with local acupuncturists regarding your situation. Acupuncture may help to control the blood pressure if the acupuncturists know the main cause of your hypertension.
Acupuncture isn't going to cure you, but it may help to lower your blood pressure. However, the reason why you are having high blood pressure needs to be considered because that will determine how effective treatment will be.
Lifestyle and dietary changes are generally necessary to see longterm change. I don't recommend stopping any medications without first speaking with your doctor.

Yes, there are points to lower blood pressure. An acupuncturist can also help to assess what within your lifestyle may be increasing your blood pressure and how to improve it organically.
In some cases, hypertension meds are most definitely warranted, as this can be a life-threatening condition. But if your case is mild and your doctor thinks it can be controlled with diet, exercise or acupuncture, then acupuncture may be able to lower blood pressure but I would never say it can cure anything. Acupuncture helps restore the body homeostatically, meaning balancing things that are out of balance to normal levels. Such as cortisol levels, blood pressure, respiration rates, hormones, blood sugar and so on. Engaging in activities such as tai chi, meditation, yoga, etc. can definitely lower high blood pressure over time. Removing yourself from stressful situations as often as possible will aid in this endeavor as well. Getting proper sleep, where you can reach deep REM sleep is key in balancing blood and hormones. Certain foods can help lower BP. Finding out which foods ( and it's not JUST salt ) can worsen hypertension may be worth some research. Good luck!!!
Acupuncture is wonderful for alleviating hypertension and all the symptoms that accompany. I have many clients who have successfully lowered the dosage--and some who have even discontinued--of their hypertension medication.
Hi there,
Please consult with your primary physician for proper diagnose, get recommendation and referral. TCM do have chi kung exercises, acupuncture treatment, and herbal medicine to help with hypertension. But please get a diagnosis first from your regular doctor for correction treatment.

Yes, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can certainly help with hypertension. Your practitioner would have you work with your MD to wean you off your meds once your blood pressure starts to improve. Diet is also a big part of HBP, and your acupuncturist should be able to counsel you on that, as well. Diet is a huge part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Along with blood pressure readings, an acupuncturist treats hypertension by first making a pattern diagnosis. The acupuncturist will determine your particular pattern by examining your tongue and pulse(s), along with history taking, observation and examination. This makes for a very successful and individualized treatment as two people with the same high blood pressure numbers may receive very different acupuncture treatments.
The number of treatments you need for the best results will be determined by your acupuncturist. Hypertension is a condition that also benefits greatly when Chinese herbs are part of the treatment plan, when appropriate. Give it a try!

"Cure" is a really strong word that most everyone in the medical field is forbidden to use legally. "Treat" and "Help" are more appropriate to use, as is "Reduce" in cases of hypertension. I have helped people keep their hypertension in check, but lifestyles and diet can exacerbate the issue, so there's really nothing that can keep it gone forever. Though we can help keep it in check, help you cope with stressors in your life, help you evaluate proper diet, etc.
The acupuncture can help calm the nervous system and ease you emotionally and help regulate the hormonal balance as well. So, it can help and it can treat, but "cure" is too strong a word for anyone to use.
I hope this helps and I hope you find a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac) to help you.

Acupuncture can work quite well for hypertension. If you're taking any prescription medication to help manage your blood pressure, make sure your doctor is aware you are going to try acupuncture. When acupuncture starts to bring your blood pressure down, you're going to need your physician to alter the dose of your medication. Otherwise you run the risk of ending up with blood pressure that's too low.
