Can contrast dye damage kidneys?

I will have a CT scan with contrast. I am afraid. Can contrast dye damage kidneys?

Usually, patients with normal kidney function will not develop contrast nephropathy. If you are still worried, please check your renal function.
Depending on your creatinine levels it would be preferred no contrast.
Not if you have normal kidneys to start with, but drink a lot of water pre- and post-contrast.

The typical intravenous contrast used in CT is cleared from the body by the kidneys. It may damage the kidneys if too much is used or if your kidneys are already compromised. Therefore, the amount used is limited and you may have to have a blood test first to evaluate your kidney function. After receiving IV contrast, you should hydrate to flush your system.
