OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions

Concerned

My 18 yr old daughter has been experiencing uncontrollable nausea, vomiting, and pain while on her monthly. It starts a day or two prior and last about 5 days. While she has always had “ bad” periods they have gotten worse this last year. This is the 4 the month in a row that we have had to go get IV fluids and a potassium drip. She takes prescribed nausea meds but they don't really help. What could this be? She is fine throughout the month so I believe it is related to her cycle. I'm concerned and she is tired of feeling this way.

This is such a common problem and know that you are not alone. Without knowing you or your daughter, the first thing I would recommend is an elimination diet. This includes the top 5-7 most allergenic foods in our American Diet. These are wheat, dairy, soy, shellfish, peanuts, corn and eggs. Also remove sugar, alcohol and caffeine. Over 3 weeks the inflammation in her system will gradually reduce. If this is not performed 100%, it's the same as continuing on all of the foods. I see many women whose inflammation shifts dramatically and they begin feeling better each month after completing an elimination diet and staying off of the foods that they find affect them.
