I would like to have more data, such as your age and your weight. If you are 80, well your glucose levels are fine. I am more aggressive than many doctors, if you are overweight, a Glp 1 like Ozempic or Trulicity would be great. If not, Jardiance or Farxiga would be great. WIth these medications, your Ha1c would fall to a nondiabetic level. Dr. Norwood
You do not need another medication. What you are presenting is a case of Dawn phenomena, in which the morning blood glucose rises due to a transient surge in the Growth hormone and Cortisol level in the early morning hours and causes insulin resistance and hence transient morning hyperglycemia. No indication of treatment unless BG rises above 180 mg/dl.
The morning blood glucose depends on the timing and composition of the day's evening meal. Plan to eat a large breakfast, satisfying lunch, and light supper. Lunch and supper should be rich in vegetables. Breakfast should include an egg. The food is best consumed and digested between the hours of 4 AM and 4 PM. Metformin should be taken after the evening meal. You have a good hemoglobin A1c score. With the proper meal planning, I would expect your HbA1c will soon be less than 6 %.
Because Metformin treats insulin resistance as well as diabetes; I usually increase the dose to 1000mg twice daily if this is tolerated. There is no risk of hypoglycemia with this medication alone and it generally improves other conditions associated with diabetes that are not caused by high glucose levels such as heart attacks and strokes. I do not feel that you need different medications now; however, I usually check an insulin level in the blood, and if this level is less than 20 no additional medications are needed. Continue a healthy lifestyle and an A1c level of 6.2% is great!
You are on a really low dose of metformin. Ask your doctor about increasing the amount of metformin. You can take up to 2000mg a day.
