Did my hernia come back after surgery?

I had hernia mesh surgery in 2017 on my left side. It feels like it came back. I had it checked and was told it's now on the right side even though the pain is on the left. Is that possible, having left side pain for a right side hernia?

Your pain is unrelated to your Hernia in your right side. I bet the right hernia must be already present but not clinically apparent. After left hernia repair because of weakness in the right, pressure shifted to the right thus the right hernia became apparent. Left groin pains needs to be worked especially if it is progressive.
Hi, Dr. Willkomm here. You have an interesting problem. Although it is possible to have “referred pain.” Pain that you perceive in one place when the problem is somewhere else. This however would be very unusual for an abdominal hernia. A quick physical exam should be able to tell the difference. I hope that helps.
There is a 1-2% chance that a hernia recurs after repair. You could very well have a recurrent hernia on the left and a new one on the right. Make sure you are evaluated by a surgeon. Imaging (such as an ultrasound or CT) may be required.
Where is the nerve? That’s where the pain will be.
