Hand Surgeon Questions Hand Surgeon

Do I have a blood clot in my wrist?

I have pain and redness in my wrist near the tendon, I don't remember injuring it. The pain hurts when I pull my hand back to stretch the tendon.

Thank you for your question.
Based on your description pain and redness in the wrist, especially near a tendon, with pain on stretching this is more likely tendonitis or tenosynovitis rather than a blood clot.

Typical signs of tendonitis or overuse injury include

Localized pain over the tendon

Redness or mild swelling

Pain when stretching or moving the wrist in certain ways

Blood clots deep vein thrombosis in the wrist area are rare and usually occur in larger veins of the arms or legs.
They generally cause swelling, warmth, and tenderness, and not isolated pain with tendon movement.

However, if you notice

Increasing swelling

Severe redness spreading up your arm

Heat or fever

Numbness or tingling

You should see a doctor right away.

For now, resting the wrist, applying ice, and avoiding activities that strain it may help.

A blood clot is highly unlikely. Inflammation or bacterial infection is more likely. If bacterial you may need antibiotics.
