Do ear infections clear up on their own?

My son is 9 years old and he has an ear infection. Do ear infections clear up on their own?

Yes - they can with some time - if the pain persists for more than a couple of days, he needs to see his pediatrician.
If you are speaking of a middle ear infection, which is the typical infection that a child gets, then the answer is yes.  If we are speaking of “swimmers ear” then the answer is noMost infections of the middle ear will resolve on their own, however, if your child is under age 2 or has not completed his/her immunizations, then waiting for resolution on its own may result in very severe disease for the child, including pneumonia, bone, and joint infections and possible meningitis.  Please discuss with your doctor if your child is old enough and current on shots before deciding whether or not to “wait and watch” or to treat with oral antibiotics.
