Dear 14-year-old male,

Yes, there is a lot of research showing that a kind of therapy called *e*xposure and *r*esponse *p*revention (ERP) is very effective for helping people overcome most of their social anxiety. With a therapist's help, the person finds ways to help them stay calm while they are nervous, figure out the social things that make them a little anxious all the way up to very, very anxious, and then how to very gradually face those fears from easy to hard. This doesn't mean the person will never be anxious around people ever again, but they can usually do the things they want and need to do without being incredibly nervous in safe situations.
