Naturopathic Physician Questions

Hair shedding

I am a 24 y/o male with a past history of stage 3 testicular cancer back in 2020 undergoing 9 weeks of chemotherapy before being cleared.
For the past six months I've been experiencing excessive hair shedding on both my head and entire body including eyebrows (hairline has receded significantly in the corners). Both body and head hair have become extremely thin/weak and have declined in their rich black/brown color. I also experience dandruff on my scalp and facial hair.
By just gently rubbing any spot on my body I am able to pickup anywhere from 2-5 hairs consistently.
Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry to hear about your struggle with cancer but glad you made it through that. Everyone reacts differently to chemo and unfortunately it is not uncommon to have permanent changes to thickness and hair patterns. It is certainly worth a visit to a naturopath, there are many that have special interest in dermatology and that would be a good place to start. Without a good physical exam and history its hard to make any other recommendations. Look up your states naturopathic association webpage for help finding a provider.
Your oncologist may have explained hair loss is part of the chemotherapy journey. I would actually have to know more information before guiding you on what to do post chemo. We would have to discuss this so that there are no conflicts with your ongoing treatment plan if you are currently under the care of an oncologist so that you may safely and effectively get results on replenishing your cells to optimal function without proliferating cancer cells if you are in remission.
With your personal history its hard to say if one or all of your diagnosis are apart of the issue. This would require a more extensive evaluation that what this platform allows. Definitely start looking at leaky gut and nutritional levels as a starting place. Also consider an evaluation of your Homocysteine to see how your body is supporting inflammation.
This can definitely be related to your chemotherapy treatments but can also be related to digestive, stress or other hormone imbalances leading to the hair loss. Please follow up with your Oncologist or your Primary care physician.
Hair shedding can be a result of a number of imbalances, so its hard to say without knowing more about your body's physiology. Catabolic imbalances, poor protein assimilation and mineral imbalances can all lead to hair loss and excess shedding. I help patients understand their physiology by teaching them to run their own simple tests at home. An inexpensive HTMA hair analysis can also give us insight as to what imbalances to focus on to improve symptoms and overall health. I make recommendations for foods and supplements that can help bring their body back into balance. Digestion and absorption of nutrients can be a big factor which leads to a number of symptoms and affects many other systems of the body. With your history of IBS, digestion is likely a factor. If you would like, I can send you a free digestive jumpstart course that can walk you through some simple steps to get you started. Let me know if you are interested or if you have any questions.
