Surgery can relieve the compression of the nerve
It depends on what is "trapping" the nerve. If it is the usual bulging or herniated disk. Initially, decompression therapy (traction) may resolve the problem. If there's significant disk bulging or vertebral body deterioration, then surgery may be necessary. Any other less common causes of nerve entrapment need to be addressed on an individual case by case basis. Check with your doctor as to the causes and best treatment options from the more conservative ones to the more aggressive options.

Physical therapy is a short-term solution, but depending on the extent of the entrapment, you may need anywhere from a small local surgery to a large open operation. You should be evaluated by a neurologist and/or a neurosurgeon.
