There are a number of options for sedation including oral, iv and general anesthesia. The Dr. should be able to discuss with you the treatment options, modalities of sedation/general anesthesia, risks and alternatives.

There is a spectrum of sedation options you should discuss with his pediatric dentist. The options range from no sedation, nitrous oxide, mild oral sedation (like valium) with nitrous oxide, moderate sedation (like Versed) up to general anesthesia. The best option for your son will depend on his medial health, the amount of dental work to be done and the comfort level of the pediatric dentist.
