It doesn't take much. Stepping off a curb that you don't see is enough. Sitting with your legs crossed, sitting with a wallet in your back pocket, sitting with improper posture, not wearing good shoes can all cause your hips to get out of alignment. Other more serious causes could be sport injuries, falling off a ladder or down stairs, or being in a car crash.
Hips out of alignment could be because of several reasons. As a chiropractor for Olympic athletes, hips misalignment is common due to jumping, not stretching, and muscle imbalance. It also could be because of stress and anxiety. Some athletes have a true leg discrepancy, making them prone to hip pain.
With wear-and-tear as you get older and repeated stress from activities like long-distance running, the cartilage can wear down and the muscles and tendons in the hip region get overused, leading to hip pain. Hip pain and hip misalignment fall into the same spectrum.
The hips can go out of alignment for many reasons. Usually from a pattern created by an old trauma or fall. Posture also plays a big role in hip alignment.
