Depending on the type of surgery required for implant placement, the discomfort usually lasts 3-4 days which can be managed with pain medication like Tylenol and/or ibuprofen.
Interestingly most patients do not complain of pain after implants- probably because the expectation was so great. The first couple of days after the treatment one should treat the area as a wound.
Not knowing the details of your case, it is hard to say how long to expect discomfort. If you have not discussed this with the dentist that placed the implant, then you should do so immediately. If you want a second opinion, then you should see a qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. I hope that it works out well for you.
The first 24 hours are usually the most uncomfortable time. Sometimes pain lasts for 3 days to 2 weeks depending on where and how the implant is located and whether or not it was immediately following a tooth extraction. It also depends on age and your health. Generally, molar areas take longer to heal, and the more you control the swelling the less the pain. The best medication for swelling is Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin and an ice pack for the first three days. After three days start warm packs. Make sure you have no underlying medical conditions that prohibit you from taking the Ibuprofen. If pain worsens and does not subside in 3-4 days, call your dentist. Hope you will feel well soon.
Since implant placement is a surgical procedure the pain and discomfort are anticipated. Patient should received post operative instructions along with an antibiotic and pain medication for next 10 days .
If the pain persists beyond 10 days or / and any redness , swelling occurs you will have to talk about it to your surgeon.
