Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Specialist Questions Pneumonia

My baby has been admitted in NICU for pneumonia. How long do you think it will take for him to recover?

My baby who is 16 months old has been admitted in the NICU for pneumonia. He is currently on a ventilator and the doctors are saying he is responding to medication, though recovery will take time. How long do you think it will take? And what immediate measures should we take once he's back home?

You mean PICU? I wish him a good recovery. Please talk to your baby's doctor about your questions.
16 months old is usually in the PICU (Pediatric ICU) and not in NICU (Neonatal ICU), but regardless, children on ventilator are having significant breathing problems and recovery could take a week or more. Recovery depends upon several factors and it is not possible to give you definitive answer based on information given. The measures that you can take are to make sure that the child is protected by the available vaccines. Early medical care when he/she gets cold would also be important. It would also be important to make sure that adults taking care of him/her are also protected by vaccines such as flu vaccine. These are just some of the things you could do.
