FDA recommends that with your first depressive episode you treat the depression until it is remission for 1 year. If you have break through depression before the year you reset the time until symptom free. The reason why is that you can treat depression with medication and individual therapy. When compared medication and therapy look the same after 1 year. If you you have 3 major depressions it is thought that a person will need antidepressants for the rest of their life unless the do therapy.
Hello,
It depends on you and the person who prescribed it and other factors that will determine how long you will take the antidepressants
The first bout of major depression should be treated anywhere from 6 to 9 months at a minimum after symptoms resolve. The 2nd bout should be treated for at least 2 years, and 3 or more bouts means the risk of relapse without medications will be very high, and medication(s) should be continued indefinitely unless it stops working or you run into major side effects or other problems.
