How often do you need new insulin?

I am a 30 year old male. I want to know how often do you need new insulin?

Dear Patient,

There are many different types of insulins available. Their shelf lives are usually indicated on the brochure accompanying the prescription. In clinical practice, I ask my patients to renew their insulin when they estimate they have a week left.

It depends on what kind of insulin you are getting. The old NPH and regular pens are only good for 10-14 days at room temperature (<77deg F) Humalog and Novolog are good for 28 days at room temperature, and Tresiba is good for 56 days at room temp. Refrigerated they are good until the date marked.
