You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off. What you eat is kind of up to you. We do not recommend eating anything small or sharp. Stay away from chips, rice, anything that can get stuck in the socket. For the first 48 hours, it's better to do more of a softer food diet (well cooked pasta, chicken, mashed potatoes).
Wait for the novacaine to wear off before you eat. Keep food away from the extracted side and keep that side clean.
You can eat as soon as the anesthesia wears off, but you should only eat softer foods and avoid chewing in the area of the tooth extraction for a few days.
