Councelor/Therapist Questions stress

How can I handle my work stress better?

I am undergoing severe stress at work. This is, in turn, affecting my family and personal life. What are the ways I can manage this stress better?

When you feel stressed, you can start a relaxing process that will calm the body and the mind and enable you to think better and act more "in-control." Here's the process: (Try these steps first when sitting - then when you have mastered them, you can do them either sitting or standing.) 1) put your hand on your stomach 2) and breathe in with your mouth closed 3) breathe through your nose 4) your stomach should move out as much as possible 5) then breathe out through your mouth 6) your stomach should move in as tightly as possible Continue these steps until you feel relaxed and able to get back to whatever you were doing. You will feel more relaxed and refreshed. The stress will be gone as your focus has been on the physical movements and the increase of oxygen in your system.
Seeing a therapist can be one wonderful way to manage stress. It can be helpful just to talk to someone and feel heard, seen, understood, and validated. Additionally, a therapist can teach you useful stress management strategies. They may also help you gain additional awareness into any deeper issues that may be contributing to and underlying your stress response.

A few strategies I like to recommend to my clients include practicing mindfulness throughout the day, meditation, exercise (especially yoga), grounding exercises, breathing exercises, self-compassion, self-care, and connecting and getting support from other understanding and supportive people. With many of these strategies, the more you practice them, the more
effective they become.

Good luck!

Stress affects every part of us - physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual. It's important to start by understanding what the stress is stemming from: Are you afraid of failing and are thus saying "yes" to every project or task? Or are you working like a dog to earn a promotion? Or something else? There's no one way to address stress, but good approaches include setting healthy work boundaries, making sure your priorities are in order, and practicing good self care.
