Pulmonologist (Pediatric) Questions Asthma

Is asthma hereditary?

My grandfather had asthma (pretty severe). My mom doesn't have it. I'm concerned I might get it or that my children might get it as severely as my grandfather had. How can I prevent it from happening? Or is it hereditary?

Asthma development is multi factorial such family history, social conditions and virally induced. In addition, having underlying allergies also contribute to asthma. Therefore if your grandfather had severe asthma, there is a strong possibility that your children are possibly at risk. Pay attention to symptoms like chronic cough, wheeze and/or shortness of breath.
Yes, there is a significant component of family history for asthma in childhood.
