I was diagnosed with a disc hernia. Is disc hernia serious?

A disc herniation is a serious injury. It can be treated successfully in a non surgical manner if the injury is not considered a medical emergency, such as a ruptured disc with floating fragments resulting in loss of bowel and bladder control. Yes a disc injury can be that severe. During my 34 years in practice I have successfully treated thousands of patients suffering from disc herniations. I see them daily.

A disc herniation can compromise the spinal cord (canal stenosis) or the nerve roots (foraminal stenosis) resulting in a loss of strength in a muscle, loss of sensation (numbness) to an area as well as pain.

I advise getting treatment as soon as possible for the best outcome.
Disc herniations can be very painful. Sometimes you just feel low back pain, other times it travels down your leg. It depends on the severity of the herniation. It is best to avoid sitting and bending as that increases the pressure on the disc. Rather stand or walk. We as chiropractors have been able to treat this condition successfully in many cases and the disc is able to heal with scar tissue. I would recommend getting care for it which will help the healing process. Depends on the level, location and protrusion. Some people have multiple disc irritations and live with NO symptoms and some have 1-2 levels and are in sever radiating pain and loss of activities of daily living. So it all depend on you, your lifestyle, your level of symptoms and your MRI report. One fact is for SURE,… the impact of your posture on rate of damage,… for more info you can setup a televise with me ( +1 424 379-9357) all the best
People with disc herniations can have no pain and have 10/10 pain and everything in between. The very best treatment for a herniated disc is called non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. I wrote a book on it. I'm happy to email you or anyone else a free copy of it. Just got to my website www.jointeffortchiro.com and ask us to email it to you. It depends on what the degree of the disc Hernia is. Whoever diagnosed this can tell you.
The question of whether a disc hernia is serious is complex and depends on various factors, including the specific characteristics and severity of your condition. Imaging tests, such as MRI or CT scans, play a crucial role in accurately diagnosing a disc hernia, distinguishing it from other conditions like disc protrusion or prolapse. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different issues with varying implications for treatment and prognosis.

The seriousness of a disc hernia can vary significantly based on its size, location, and the extent to which it affects surrounding tissues, including nerves. In some cases, a disc hernia may cause minimal symptoms and be managed effectively with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle modifications. In other instances, especially when it leads to significant pain, numbness, or weakness, more invasive treatments like injections or surgery may be necessary.

It's important to understand that the outcomes and treatment approaches can differ greatly between individuals. Therefore, a detailed assessment, including imaging and clinical evaluation, is essential to determine the severity of your condition and the most appropriate treatment plan.
A herniated disc can very well be serious, especially depending on the severity of the herniation and its location. If you are experiencing numbness and tingling within your extremities, then those symptoms are likely coming from the area of the herniation. These types of issues like a herniation usually occurs from blunt force trauma, like a car accident or long term dehydration (ie: anti-water, big on coffee or salty snacks, etc)
A disc herniating can be serious. It depends on the severity of the injury to the disc and if it pushes on any nerves or the spinal cord. Its important to talk to your doctor about your symptoms to decide the best course of action. *Thank you,* *Dr. Dawndi Tomlinson, D.C.* Owner/Chiropractor ChiroCatered, PLLC All correspondence is covered by HIPPA regulations
It may be. It's best to receive a proper consultation and examination through various types of providers. A consultation and physical examination may be helpful to understand the severity as well. Diagnostic imaging may be best to understand the severity of the physical matter. I provide virtual coaching where I can help with ergonomically and lifestyle changes for cases like this. Please let me know how I can help in the future.
