Is interpersonal therapy for depression effective?

My 16 year old son was diagnosed with depression and I want to treat it. Is interpersonal therapy for depression effective?

It is reputed to be effective for addressing the interpersonal relationships (or lack of same) that are part of the depressive symptom picture. "Treatment without diagnosis is malpractice". This admonition reminds us that good clinical practice requires that a thorough assessment of the intended 16 year old client is the first order of business. IPT may be indicated depending on the results of said assessment. Certainly, a teen's social life is a vital part of their personal identity.

It depends on various factors. The best thing to do is to have him evaluated by a competent Adolescent Psychiatrist to determine what is the best treatment for him.

Great question,

I’m not exactly sure, but I do think that this therapy is good for relationship issues which can persist with depressive disorders. It depends upon your teen and what’s going on. Typically, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or supportive therapy are for depressive disorders. Just talk with your teen and therapist.
Hope that helps.
