Good day! Thanks for sharing your ankle concern with the FATD community. I offer my tips, suggestions, and thoughts. Swelling of the ankle either comes from an acute problem (happened from trauma and recently) or a chronic problem (one existing for more than 3 months and comes and goes, without a specific trauma). Generally, no massage until 3 weeks after an acute trauma (assuming no cast or surgery). I find that this link is a good overview of how you can help yourself recover after the onset of ankle pain. https://www.pop-doc.com/joint-preactive.html Massage can help (after 3w or right away if chronic) stimulate blood flow and help the body bring in the fluids needed to help heal (and take away the fluid that is causing the swelling. I hope this helps.
It is good to ice and lightly massage a swollen ankle. It is best to know why the ankle is swollen and address the cause of the swelling. If your ankle is swollen and you dont know why, please consult a physician to have it examined and find out how to best treat it.
No it is not.
It depends on the etiology of why your ankle is swollen. Is this secondary to your vascular system? Is it a post traumatic injury? if your ankle is swollen following a traumatic injury, the #1 thing you can do for swelling is frequent ice, in addition to anti-inflammatories. However, as stated, you need to know what is causing your ankle to be swollen in order to treat it effectively.
Massage can be helpful but you need to know what caused the swelling. I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for diagnosis, evaluation and treatment options
Sure.
It depends why the ankle is swollen. In some instances, massage can make the problem worse
