Is it normal for gums to hurt after a root canal?

I had a root canal yesterday and my gums hurt bad. Is it normal?

If the gums only are hurting that is due to a trauma from the metal clamp that was placed around the tooth to hold the rubber dam. Take some Advil and swish warm salty water for couple of days. If the tooth is hurting call your dentist and report the pain. He would know best what is causing the pain because he did the root canal.
