Dentist Questions Flossing

Is it possible to floss too often?

I pretty much floss after every single meal, but my mom thinks that this is too excessive and that I should only floss twice a day. Is it really possible to floss too frequently?

No. You can do it as much as possible but be gentle.
There is nothing wrong with flossing several times a day. Use good flossing technique, check out oralb.com for how to floss. If done properly, no harm will come to your gums or teeth. Well done on flossing!

Yes. Once per day flossing is plenty, and if you aggressively floss, you can cut your gums and cause permanent damage to the gum tissue.
I have never in 35 years had a patient over floss. That being said, I have had patients who were overly aggressive on their flossing and cut their gum tissue. I would rather have you over floss than under floss!
No. As long as you are using the correct techniques (not too aggressively) there is no issue with frequent flossing.
I would recommend to floss once a day, then, too, in the night before brushing your teeth until and unless you have food stuck between your teeth. Sometimes people with active periodontal disease benefit from flossing more frequently.
Thanks.
