Any of which if not done well can lead to serious complications for the patient. In addition any intra-abdominal surgery has a risk of developing adhesions that can cause bowel obstructions - 10% life time risk regardless of the skill of the surgeon. So yes a kidney resection qualifies as a major surgery.
